User Guide: Path Diagram Explanation Assistant
Welcome to the Path Diagram Explanation Assistant. AMOS uses a very specific visual language to represent statistical theories. This tool uses AI Vision to "read" your AMOS screenshots and explain what the shapes and arrows mean in plain English.
1. The Visual Dictionary of AMOS
- Ovals (Ellipses): These are Latent Variables. They represent abstract constructs that you cannot measure directly, such as Anxiety, Motivation, or Intelligence.
- Rectangles: These are Observed Variables. They represent the actual, tangible data you collected, such as the answers to Question 1, Question 2, or a specific test score.
- Small Circles (e1, e2, etc.): These are Measurement Errors (or residuals). They represent the variance in your observed variable that is not explained by the latent variable. Every rectangle must have an error circle attached to it.
2. Understanding the Arrows
The lines connecting your shapes are the mathematical hypotheses you are testing:
- Single-Headed Arrows (→): These represent a direct effect or regression path. In a CFA measurement model, arrows point from the Oval to the Rectangles, indicating that the latent construct "causes" the score on the questionnaire item.
- Double-Headed Arrows (↔): These represent a covariance or correlation. They show that two variables are related, but do not imply that one causes the other. In CFA, we typically draw these between all of our Latent Variables (ovals).
3. How to take a good screenshot
For the AI to read your model accurately, ensure your screenshot is clear:
- Make sure all variable names are legible.
- If you have run the analysis, click the "View output path diagram" button (the red arrow in AMOS) so the standardized estimates (numbers) appear on the arrows.
- Use the Snipping Tool (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+4 (Mac) to capture the diagram, save it as a JPG or PNG, and upload it here.
