Interpretation of Descriptive Statistics Output

Based on the descriptive statistics from my questionnaire, the responses show several interesting patterns regarding students’ use of AI tools in academic writing.

The mean score for the item “I use AI tools to generate ideas for writing assignments” is 4.1, while the median is 4 and the mode is also 4 on a 5-point Likert scale. These central tendency values suggest that most participants generally agree that they frequently use AI tools for brainstorming ideas. Since the mean, median, and mode are very close, the responses appear to be relatively consistent and centered around agreement.

The standard deviation (SD) is 0.72, which indicates that the responses are not widely spread out. In other words, most students gave similar answers, and there is not much variation among the participants. This may suggest that AI use for writing support has become quite common among the sample.

One of the most surprising findings is that the item related to “confidence in writing without AI support” has a lower mean of 2.8. This suggests that many students may rely heavily on AI tools and feel less confident when completing writing tasks independently.

Regarding the distribution, there do not appear to be serious issues with outliers or extreme skewness, as the mean and median are close to each other. However, the slightly higher concentration of responses at 4 and 5 may indicate a mild positive skew toward agreement, showing generally favorable attitudes toward AI use.

Overall, these results imply that the sample has a strong tendency to use AI tools in academic writing, particularly for idea generation and language support.
