For my research topic, a case study design would be the most suitable qualitative approach. My study focuses on exploring how educational games are used in Grade 6 English vocabulary lessons and how they affect students’ motivation and learning experiences in a specific classroom context. A case study is appropriate because it allows me to investigate this issue in depth within a real-life setting, such as one class or one school.

One major strength of this design is that it provides a rich and detailed understanding of the teaching and learning process. Through classroom observation, interviews with teachers and students, and analysis of lesson materials, I can gather multiple sources of data to better understand how games influence vocabulary learning. This design also helps capture the interaction between students, teachers, and the classroom environment.

However, one challenge is that the findings may be limited to one particular group of students and may not be easily generalized to other schools or contexts. Another difficulty is that collecting and analyzing detailed qualitative data can be time-consuming.

For example, I might conduct a case study in one Grade 6 class where the teacher regularly uses vocabulary games such as matching activities, word bingo, or online quizzes. By observing several lessons and interviewing students afterward, I can explore how these games support engagement and vocabulary retention.

I think your choice of a case study design fits your topic really well, especially since you want to explore what is happening in a real classroom context. The use of multiple data sources like observation and interviews also strengthens your design because it allows for triangulation, which improves credibility. One suggestion I have is to think about how you will ensure consistency in your observations—for example, will you use an observation checklist or framework? That could help make your data more systematic. Also, since generalizability is a limitation, you might consider providing a very detailed description of the context so others can judge whether your findings are transferable.

I agree that a case study is suitable for your topic, especially since you want an in-depth understanding of how educational games work in a real classroom. Your use of multiple data sources (observations, interviews, materials) also shows good triangulation, which strengthens the study. However, as you mentioned, limited generalizability is a concern. One possible solution is to provide thick description of the context so that other researchers can judge whether the findings are transferable to similar settings.
