I think phenomenology is the most suitable qualitative design for my research topic, which focuses on students’ perceptions of using generative AI in EFL academic writing. This is because phenomenology aims to explore individuals’ lived experiences and how they make sense of a particular phenomenon. In my case, I want to understand how students experience using AI tools, especially in terms of academic honesty and ethical concerns.
One strength of this design is that it allows for deep and detailed insights into students’ thoughts and feelings, which cannot be captured through numbers alone. However, a challenge might be that collecting and analyzing qualitative data, such as interview transcripts, can be time-consuming. It may also be difficult to ensure objectivity, as interpretations can be influenced by the researcher’s perspective.
For example, I could conduct in-depth interviews with a small group of students and ask them to describe their experiences using AI in writing tasks. Then, I would analyze their responses to identify common themes, such as feelings of guilt, convenience, or dependency. This would help me better understand how students perceive and use generative AI in an academic context.
