In a hypothetical study, I would examine whether a new teaching method improves students’ English vocabulary scores. There would be two groups: one group using the new method and another using the traditional method. These are two separate groups of students, so the data come from different participants.

Because the groups are independent and not related to each other, I would use an independent samples t-test. This test is appropriate for comparing the means of two unrelated groups to see if there is a statistically significant difference between them.

The key reason for choosing this test is that each participant only belongs to one group, and there is no pairing or repeated measurement involved.

Your scenario regarding [Classmate's Topic] is very clear! I agree with your choice of an Independent Samples T-Test because you are comparing two distinct groups (e.g., Males vs. Females or Freshmen vs. Seniors). One thing I’m curious about: if you decided to track the same group of students over a whole semester instead of comparing two different groups, how do you think that would change the results you're looking for?
