Why Correlation Does Not Imply Causation

It is important not to assume causality from a correlation because a relationship between two variables does not prove that one directly causes the other. There could be a third variable (confounding variable) influencing both, or the direction of the relationship could be unclear. Without experimental control, we cannot determine cause-and-effect.

Example of a Spurious Correlation

A classic example is the correlation between ice cream sales and drowning rates. These two variables are positively correlated, but one does not cause the other. Instead, a third variable—hot weather—increases both ice cream consumption and swimming activity, which can lead to more drowning incidents.

Reflection on My Own Correlation Matrix

In my matrix, there is a negative correlation between stress and life satisfaction. At first glance, it might seem that higher stress causes lower life satisfaction. However, this cannot be concluded because:

  • There may be other factors involved, such as financial problems or academic pressure
  • The relationship could be bidirectional (low life satisfaction might also increase stress)
  • The study does not involve experimental manipulation

Therefore, while the variables are related, we cannot claim a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
