1. Regression equation

Total perceived stress = 50.828 − 0.621(Total Mastery) − 0.175(Total PCOISS)

Where:

  • Total Mastery = score on the mastery measure (higher = greater sense of control)

  • Total PCOISS = score on the Perceived Criticism and Over-Involvement Scale (higher = more perceived criticism / over-involvement)

2. Interpretation of one standardized Beta coefficient

Take Total Mastery (β = –0.422, p < .001).
For every one standard deviation increase in Mastery scores, predicted perceived stress decreases by 0.422 standard deviations, holding Total PCOISS constant. This is a moderate-to-strong negative relationship, and among the two predictors, Mastery has a slightly larger unique contribution to explaining stress (compared to PCOISS, β = –0.358).

3. One‑sentence practical implication

Helping individuals strengthen their sense of personal mastery (e.g., through skill‑building, cognitive reframing, or goal‑setting interventions) is likely to yield meaningful reductions in perceived stress, even in the presence of external criticism or over‑involvement from others.
