Research Topic: Technology-Assisted Pronunciation Training: Improving Vowel Production of Secondary School Students Using the Speechace API

Well-written survey question:

"How helpful is Speechace API for your vowel pronunciation?"

  • Very helpful
  • Helpful
  • Neutral
  • Not helpful
  • Not helpful at all

This survey question is clear, so students at level A2 easily understand what is being asked. It is focused because it only asks about the helpfulness of the Speechace API for vowel pronunciation. The wording is neutral, with no leading or biased language. It is also measurable because it uses a Likert scale, making the responses easy to analyze.

Poor-written survey question:

"Don’t you think Speechace API is the best and easiest tool to improve your pronunciation and speaking skills quickly?"

The question is biased because the phrase “Don’t you think” pushes students to agree. It is also leading, as it suggests the tool is “the best and easiest”.  It is vague, since the word “quickly” is unclear and subjective.

I am not sure about your first question, because according to our first lesson with Mr.Vu, we should advoid making a survey question as question form. You can refer to this point by accessing to the "Likert Scales" page. Personally, this question is kind of general and it's hard for A2 Ss to monitor the improvement in their vowel pronunciation. Have you considered about ending sound instead? I think it will be easier for you to track on.

Thank you very much, Han, for your helpful advice. I was absent from the previous class, which led to a misunderstanding. I’ll make sure to improve next time.

Hi Thu, here are some things I think would help with your questionnaire.

So, the question you gave for the first one is slightly vague about the learning context. It does not specify when or after how much use students are evaluating the tool. Moreover, “helpful” is a general term and does not indicate how it helps (accuracy, awareness, confidence, etc.), which may limit the depth of interpretation.

If you were to make some changes, I think it would be better.
Hope this helps!
