Dear Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Ngọc Vũ and classmates,

Here is my brief description for the "Peer Preview: My Research Topic and RQs".

  • Research title/topic:

The Impact Of Using Grammarly On The Writing Improvement Of HUFLIT Undergraduates In Ho Chi Minh City

  • Main research aim/objectives:

The crucial aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of the Grammarly app as a tool to enhance writing skills for HUFLIT Undergraduates in Ho Chi Minh City. Specifically, the study would determine if regular use of the app leads to a statistically significant improvement in undergraduates' writing skills and the reduction in recurring grammatical and spelling errors in their academic writing assignments.

  • Research questions (2–3 max):

  1. Is there a significant difference in the frequency of writing errors in grammar and spelling in academic writing assignments before and after the use of Grammarly by HUFLIT students in Ho Chi Minh City?
  2. To what extent do undergraduates perceive Grammarly as a tool that improves their long-term understanding of English writing on grammar and spelling, versus a short-term "quick fix"?
  • Methodology (quant/qual/mixed):

I decided to choose the mixed-methods design for the Methodology of this study.

  • Quantitative: I will collect survey data from 100 HUFLIT students in Ho Chi Minh City to conduct a T-test to compare the error rates or grades before and after the use of Grammarly, and descriptive statistics to measure the frequency of use.

  • Qualitative: I will conduct semi-structured interviews with 5 students to explore their personal experiences and perceptions of how the app affects their writing practice process.

Hi chị Như,

Great topic choice! Grammarly is so widely used that studying its effectiveness is really practical and relevant for teachers and students. Your mixed-methods design is smart, comparing error frequencies (quantitative) plus student perceptions (interviews) gives you a complete picture. I like that RQ1 is specific and measurable.

Some suggestions I have are:
-  It is a fact that students with lower level of English proficiency will make more errors than their higher level counterparts. Therefore, the ones that are already in C1-C2 level will make less errors, making Grammarly "less effective" on the surface, which is not necessarily the case. My two cents are you narrowing it down to 1 level only, and maybe even one specific problem, like "Is there a significant differences in error frequency in the use of the Simple past tense in academic writing assignment of students in B1 level" or something for more meaningful result.
- RQ2 is interesting, it focuses on the perspective of the students, but I'm quite interested in how you can measure this. The interviews will tell you what students think they learned, but not whether they actually retained knowledge. Consider adding a third writing task (without Grammarly) 1-2 weeks later to see if improvements stick. Also, 100 surveys is great, but only 5 interviews feels small. Could you do 8-10 for richer qualitative data?

Overall, feasible and valuable. I'm really looking forward to seeing the result of this research.
