Research topic: Learner-Related Factors Influencing the Self-Reported English Speaking Performance of Undergraduate EFL Students at a University in Ho Chi Minh City

Main research aim/objectives:

  • To investigate how EFL students estimate their English speaking competence
  • To find out how influential the learner-related factors are on oral output performance based on the EFL students' perspective
  • To identify the most influential learner-related factor on English speaking ability perceived by EFL students

 Research questions:

  1. RQ1: How do EFL students rate their overall English speaking ability?
  2. RQ2: To what extent do EFL students agree that learner-related factors affect their English speaking performance?
  3. RQ3: From the EFL students’ perspective, which factor is considered the most influential on their English speaking performance?

Planned methodology: This study adopts a quantitative method using a Likert-scale questionnaire. It is chosen because it focuses on EFL students' perceptions of their English speaking ability and related factors. The quantitative method also helps summarize responses from a large sample. Plus, a Likert-scale questionnaire enables systematic measurement and analysis of perceptions, trends, and factor identification.

Hi Phuong Anh,
I see that your topic is clear and feasible, with a defined group (undergraduate EFL students) and focus (self-reported speaking performance). The Likert-scale questionnaire suits the aim of gathering perceptions from a large sample.

If I have to change anything in your outline, I guess it might be to narrow RQ1 to specific aspects like fluency or confidence, so that it relates more to the topic of English-speaking performance.

Overall, to me, your study idea is solid. I learn a lot from it.

Topic clarity and feasibility
The topic is clear, relevant, and feasible for a quantitative study at the university level. However, the term learner-related factors is quite broad and could be more clearly defined.

Suggestions to narrow or sharpen the research questions
RQ1 is clear and measurable. RQ2 and RQ3 could be sharpened by specifying which learner-related factors are examined and how the “most influential” factor will be identified.

Ideas for improvement or further consideration
Consider clearly categorizing learner-related factors in the framework to improve focus. A brief justification for using self-reported speaking performance instead of test scores would also strengthen the study.
