Scenario: I am interested in exploring whether the application of AI-assisted writing tools can improve the academic writing test scores of students. To achieve this objective, I plan to conduct a study involving two groups of university students; one group of students will be given AI-assisted writing tools to practice their academic writing skills, while the other group of students will be given the conventional approach to academic writing practice. After four weeks of practice, both groups of students will be given the same test and their test scores compared.
Number and Type of Groups: I plan to use two groups of participants for the study:
Group 1: Students given AI-assisted writing tools for practice
Group 2: Students given the conventional approach to academic writing practice
Participants: I plan to use different participants for the two groups of the study; this is because each participant will only be given one type of practice and not both.
Test Choice and Reason for Choosing: I plan to use the independent samples t-test to analyze the data of the two groups of students; this is because the mean test scores of the two groups of participants are to be compared and the observations of the two groups of participants are not related to each other.

Dear Han,
Your scenario is clear and your test choice makes sense. I agree that an independent samples t-test is appropriate because the study compares the mean scores of two different groups. One thing you might also consider is whether the two groups should be pre-tested before the treatment, so you can check if they are similar at the beginning. That could make your comparison stronger.
