I think a qualitative approach could help me understand my research topic in a deeper and more meaningful way compared to a purely quantitative one. My topic focuses on students’ perceptions of using generative AI in EFL academic writing, so numbers alone may not fully capture their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. While quantitative data can show general trends, qualitative data can explain why students feel a certain way, especially regarding ethical concerns and academic honesty.
For my study, I think semi-structured interviews would be the most useful method because they allow students to express their personal experiences in detail. Focus groups could also be helpful, as students might build on each other’s ideas and reveal shared concerns or different perspectives. Observation might be less relevant, since my topic is more about perceptions than behaviors.
I also see strong potential for using a mixed-methods approach. For example, I could use a survey to collect general data and then follow up with interviews to explore key issues more deeply. This combination would make my findings more comprehensive and reliable.
