My topic: EXAMINING THE USE AND ACCURACY OF COMPLEX SENTENCE STRUCTURES IN ELS JUNIORS’ ACADEMIC WRITING AT HUFLIT

  • A well-written survey question: Restricted practice time in class impacts the accuracy of complex sentences in students' writing.

It is a good survey question because it is a statement not a question, participants can express their point of views by choosing a range of respones options in a Likert scale.

  • A poorly constructed survey question: Students are bad at academic writing because English isn't their native language and they are lack of time to pratice.

Even though, this question is a statement but it conatins too many details for a survey question which can be confused by readers that which part are participants agree with?

As I was reading our response, I figured there are some things I could contribute so you can consider adapting it for your question.

There is a causal wording situation here. The phrase “impacts” implies a cause–and–effect relationship, which is risky in perception-based surveys. Respondents can report beliefs, not actual impact. Also, I can find some ambiguity here: “Restricted practice time” is not defined—students may interpret this differently. Lastly, the question tends to be overgeneralized: “students’ writing” is broad; it would be stronger to specify their own writing.
